Jackson Heights is a planned garden-city development: Edward A. MacDougall’s Queensboro Corporation bought 325 acres in 1909, laid the neighborhood out in 1916, and coined the term garden apartment for apartments built around shared private gardens; the neighborhood is named after Jackson Avenue, itself named for John C. Jackson. The New York Times has called it the most culturally diverse neighborhood in New York, if not on the planet, and about half the population has been foreign-born since the 2000s.

  • Garden apartment complexes such as Linden Court, the Château, the Towers, and Dunolly Gardens.
