Neighborhood Overview

Hollis Hills is a primarily residential neighborhood in eastern Queens, in Community District 11, distinct from the neighboring Hollis and Holliswood. Its ZIP codes are 11427 and 11364, and the mailing address varies by side of the neighborhood. It is roughly bounded by the Clearview Expressway to the west, Springfield Boulevard to the east, the Grand Central Parkway to the south, and the old Vanderbilt Motor Parkway to the north. Union Turnpike runs through the neighborhood, and Bell Boulevard runs through its eastern part. Hollis Hills took shape in the 1930s–1950s as a planned, almost entirely residential suburban enclave on hilly glacial terminal moraine, with winding streets following the land’s contours and Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Cape Cod, and Ranch homes on large tree-lined lots. Its name reflects the rolling topography and the historical association with Hollis; developers added ‘Hills’ early in the 20th century to distinguish this newer elevated section. Hollis Hills has no commercial core inside the neighborhood. The Hollis Hills Civic Association was founded in the 1940s, according to a single secondary source.
Well-known places in and around Hollis Hills include:

  • Congregation Etz Hayim at Hollis Hills Bayside, 210-10 Union Turnpike, Flushing, NY 11364.
  • ‘Welcome to Hollis Hills’ signs and Greenstreets triangles on Union Turnpike, at Peck Avenue on the south side and at Hartland Avenue and 220th Street on the north side.
  • The Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, the neighborhood’s northern boundary, now a pedestrian and bicycle path in the Brooklyn–Queens Greenway.
  • Kissena Corridor Park, a linear green strip running along Stewart Road and Peck Avenue in Hollis Hills.
  • Surrey Estates, a smaller subsection triangle of architecturally notable homes among old large trees, bounded by Union Turnpike, Springfield Boulevard, and Hartland Avenue.
  • Cunningham Park, adjacent to the west of Hollis Hills.
