Rego Park grew as a 1920s–1930s planned suburb of brick and stucco houses and garden apartments, became a commuter hub when the IND Queens Boulevard Line arrived in the 1930s, and after World War II became a dense, diverse neighborhood of high-rise apartment buildings and detached houses with a large Jewish population, including many Bukharan Jews from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan who arrived in the 1990s, plus a major commercial zone. The main business thoroughfare is 63rd Drive, running from Woodhaven Boulevard in the south to Queens Boulevard in the north, with its central business district between Alderton Street and Queens Boulevard; most 63rd Drive businesses are original single-story "Taxpayers" from the 1930s. Queens Boulevard is the wide, 12-lane retail corridor carrying the area's malls and national chains, and 108th Street is a shopping district of smaller stores, bakeries, pharmacies, and restaurants.
