Neighborhood Overview

Corona is a neighborhood in Queens, New York, with ZIP code 11368. Most of Corona is in Queens Community District 4, while North Corona, north of Roosevelt Avenue, is in Community District 3. Its neighbors are Flushing and Flushing Meadows–Corona Park to the east, Jackson Heights and Elmhurst to the west, Forest Hills and Rego Park to the south, and East Elmhurst to the north. Street-level borders here are approximate, and Corona and East Elmhurst are often spoken of together as Corona–East Elmhurst. Roosevelt Avenue is Corona’s commercial heart, running under the elevated 7 train, with Corona Plaza at the 103rd Street–Corona Plaza station. Corona Avenue, Northern Boulevard, Junction Boulevard, and 108th Street are the other main corridors, and the intersection of 108th Street and Corona Avenue is the historic Italian-American center known as Corona Heights. Corona was first known as West Flushing, and residential development began in the northeastern corner of the old Town of Newtown in the 1850s. The name most likely comes from ‘crown,’ although several theories exist and no single one is settled. From the late 1940s through the 1960s, many legendary African-American musicians, civil-rights leaders, and athletes moved to Corona, followed by Dominican and wider Latin American immigration from the 1950s through the late 1990s. Today Corona has a Latino majority, with historic African-American and Italian-American communities and a significant Chinese population. Well-known places in Corona include:

  • The Louis Armstrong House, at 34-56 107th Street, home of Louis Armstrong and Lucille Wilson from 1943 to 1971 and now the Louis Armstrong House Museum.
  • Corona Plaza, the pedestrian plaza at Roosevelt Avenue and National Street by the 103rd Street–Corona Plaza station.
  • The Lemon Ice King of Corona, the ices shop at 52nd Avenue, Corona Avenue, and 108th Street, founded in 1944.
  • Park of the Americas, near Corona’s original center, a block south of the 103rd Street–Corona Plaza station.
  • The Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center, at 100-01 Northern Boulevard, home of the Black Heritage Reference Center.
  • The Queens Public Library Corona branch, at 38-23 104th Street.

Flushing Meadows–Corona Park borders Corona to the east; its attractions, including the Unisphere, Citi Field, and the Queens Museum, are nearby, not in Corona.

Getting Around Corona

Corona is served by the IRT Flushing Line (7 trains, with peak-direction express service), elevated along Roosevelt Avenue. The 103rd Street–Corona Plaza station opened April 21, 1917, and the 7 local stops there at all times; step-free access there is planned, not currently available. The 111th Street station, also on Roosevelt Avenue in Corona, opened October 13, 1925, and is served by the 7 local. Junction Boulevard station sits on the Corona/Jackson Heights border, and Mets–Willets Point station serves Flushing Meadows–Corona Park at Corona’s eastern edge. Bus routes serving Corona include the Q14, Q23, Q58, Q63, Q66, Q72, Q88, Q90, and Q98. Corona’s own Port Washington Branch station closed in 1964, so there is no operating LIRR station in Corona; the closest active LIRR station is Mets–Willets Point, in the park. Drivers use Northern Boulevard, Junction Boulevard, Corona Avenue, and Roosevelt Avenue, with the Horace Harding Expressway (the Long Island Expressway service road) along Corona’s southern edge.
