Neighborhood Overview

East Elmhurst is a residential neighborhood in northwest Queens, in Queens Community District 3. Its ZIP codes are 11369 east of 85th Street, 11370 west of 85th Street (including Astoria Heights), and 11371 for LaGuardia Airport itself. Neighborhood boundaries here are imprecise and disputed: the area to the south overlaps Jackson Heights, and the Astoria and Ditmars–Steinway edge to the west is also fuzzy. East Elmhurst is often spoken of together with Corona as Corona–East Elmhurst.

LaGuardia Airport sits on East Elmhurst’s northern waterfront, on the Flushing Bay and Bowery Bay shore, while the residential core lies directly south of the airport. The main corridors are Astoria Boulevard, Ditmars Boulevard, Northern Boulevard along the southern edge, 94th Street, 31st Avenue, 23rd Avenue, and 25th Avenue. Since the 1950s and 1960s, East Elmhurst has been known as home to prominent African American musicians, civil rights leaders, and athletes, including Malcolm X, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Willie Mays; the western section also has a growing Nepali community, marked by the ‘Mount Everest Way’ co-naming at 75th Street and 31st Avenue in 2019.

Well-known places in East Elmhurst include:

  • LaGuardia Airport, on the northern waterfront, opened December 2, 1939, with three active terminals (A, B, and C) and 72 gates.
  • The Marine Air Terminal (Terminal A), the Art Deco terminal designed in 1939 by William Delano, LaGuardia’s only remaining 1940s structure and its original terminal for overseas flights.
  • The Bulova Corporate Center, the original Bulova Watch Company headquarters, on the former Holmes Airport site in western East Elmhurst.
  • The Lent Homestead and Cemetery, in the Astoria Heights section, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
  • St. Michael’s Cemetery, the triangular cemetery surrounded by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Grand Central Parkway.
  • LaGuardia Landing Lights Fields, open fields under the flight path used for plane spotting and picnics.
  • The Flushing Bay Promenade (renamed the Malcolm X Promenade), a 1.4-mile waterfront promenade at the southern end of Flushing Bay.
  • One Room Schoolhouse Park, at Astoria Boulevard and 90th Street, where Queens’ last one-room schoolhouse stood from 1879 to 1934.

The Louis Armstrong House and the Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center are not in East Elmhurst — both are in neighboring Corona — and Flushing Meadows–Corona Park lies beside, not in, East Elmhurst.
