Neighborhood Overview
Forest Hills is a neighborhood in central Queens, in Queens Community District 6, with ZIP code 11375. It is bordered approximately by Corona to the north, Rego Park and Glendale to the west, Forest Park to the south, and Kew Gardens to the southeast, with Flushing Meadows–Corona Park and Kew Gardens Hills to the east. Street-level boundaries here are approximate, and Forest Park and Flushing Meadows–Corona Park are adjacent parks, not part of Forest Hills itself.
Forest Hills was originally called Whitepot. In 1906 the Cord Meyer Development Company bought 660 acres of farmland and renamed the area Forest Hills after adjacent Forest Park. It grew rapidly in the 1920s and 1930s with the widening of Queens Boulevard and the opening of the Queens Boulevard subway in 1936; its population rose from 9,500 in 1927 to 32,500 by 1940. Today it is a diverse, largely residential ‘suburb within the city’ known for Tudor Revival architecture, tree-lined streets, the private Forest Hills Gardens enclave, and the busy Austin Street shopping strip.
The main thoroughfare is Queens Boulevard. Austin Street is the commercial heart, a mile-long stretch between Yellowstone Boulevard and Ascan Avenue with shops, cafes, restaurants, and chain stores. Metropolitan Avenue is known for antique shops, and Continental Avenue is the co-name for 71st Avenue in the Forest Hills Gardens area. Other corridors include 108th Street, Yellowstone Boulevard, and Ascan Avenue.
Well-known places in Forest Hills include:
- Forest Hills Gardens, the private community on the southern side of Forest Hills, south of the LIRR tracks, with about 800 homes, townhouses, and apartment buildings in mostly Tudor, Brick Tudor, and Georgian styles, in a parklike setting designed by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.
- Forest Hills Stadium and the West Side Tennis Club, at 1 Tennis Place inside Forest Hills Gardens; the club moved from Manhattan to Forest Hills Gardens in 1914, the stadium was built in 1923, and it hosted the U.S. Open and predecessor national championships from 1915 until the late 1970s and is now a concert venue.
- Station Square, the entrance to Forest Hills Gardens and the LIRR station, with a brick courtyard, clock tower, Tudor-style brick buildings, and a brick roadway.
- Forest Hills LIRR station, at Continental Avenue (71st Avenue) and Austin Street in Station Square, opened in 1906 and rebuilt in 1911.
- Church-in-the-Gardens (50 Ascan Avenue), St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and the United States Post Office, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- MacDonald Park, at 87-20 Queens Boulevard, honoring Captain Gerald MacDonald (1882–1929), with a bronze statue, chess and backgammon tables, and circular plazas.
- Yellowstone Park (Yellowstone Municipal Park), at 106-21 68th Avenue, opened May 27, 1968, with basketball courts, playgrounds, restrooms, and a dog-friendly area.
- Queens Public Library Forest Hills branch, at 108-19 71st Avenue, and the North Forest Park branch, at 98-27 Metropolitan Avenue.
Forest Park lies to the south of Forest Hills and Flushing Meadows–Corona Park to the east; both are adjacent parks, not part of Forest Hills. The Kew Gardens–Union Turnpike subway station is in neighboring Kew Gardens, not Forest Hills.
