Neighborhood Overview

Hollis is a primarily residential neighborhood in southeastern Queens, in Community District 12, distinct from the neighboring Hollis Hills and Holliswood. Its ZIP codes are 11423 mainly, with 11412 south of 104th Avenue. It is roughly bounded by 181st Street to the west, Hillside Avenue to the north, Francis Lewis Boulevard to the east, and Murdock Avenue to the south. Jamaica Avenue is its main commercial strip, and Hillside Avenue is its northern boundary and a major commercial artery; small restaurants, delis, markets, churches, and family storefronts line its commercial streets, and it has no major shopping district. Settled by Dutch homesteaders in the 17th century and rural until 1885, when developers turned 136 acres into houses, Hollis became part of New York City in 1898. The 2010 Census recorded a population of 20,269. Since the Korean War it has been home primarily to African-American families, with a recent South Asian and West Indian influx, and by the 1950s it was home to many African-American jazz musicians. Hollis is also known as a hip-hop hotbed: Russell Simmons is from Hollis, as is his brother Joseph, who with Darryl McDaniels and Jason Mizell formed Run-D.M.C.

Getting Around Hollis

Hollis is served by the Hollis Long Island Rail Road station, at 193rd Street and Woodhull Avenue, on the Main Line, served by Hempstead Branch trains only. The station opened in May 1885 as East Jamaica and was renamed Hollis in September 1885; it was rebuilt in 1915 and again in the 1990s. It has two side platforms and no parking, and it is not accessible; the MTA names Jamaica and Queens Village as the nearest accessible stations. Bus connections at the station are the Q2, Q3, and Q110. There is no subway station in Hollis; the nearest is Jamaica–179th Street (E and F trains) on Hillside Avenue. An Archer Avenue subway extension planned in 1988 was never built. Buses serving Hollis include the Q1, Q2, Q3, Q36, Q43, Q76, Q77, Q82, and Q110; NICE buses n1, n6, n6X, n22, n24, and n26 stop at Hillside Avenue and Francis Lewis Boulevard, with westbound drop-offs and eastbound pick-ups. The Q2 and Q3 connect the Jamaica Bus Terminal with Hollis Avenue, and the Q110 runs along Jamaica Avenue. Bus routes may have changed with the MTA Queens bus redesign, so check the current MTA map before traveling. Main roads are Hillside Avenue to the north, Jamaica Avenue, Hollis Avenue, and Francis Lewis Boulevard to the east; the Van Wyck Expressway lies west of Hollis.
