Neighborhood Overview

Jamaica Estates is a neighborhood in Queens, in Community District 8, with ZIP code 11432. It is bordered by Union Turnpike to the north, Hillside Avenue to the south, Utopia Parkway and Homelawn Street to the west, and 188th Street to the east. Its neighbors are Jamaica Hills to the west, Jamaica to the southwest, Hollis to the southeast, Holliswood and Queens Village to the east, and Fresh Meadows, Utopia, and Hillcrest to the north. Midland Parkway is the neighborhood’s main road and centerpiece boulevard, with four lanes and a wide landscaped median known as the Malls. Union Turnpike and Hillside Avenue are its shopping corridors, and the Grand Central Parkway cuts through the neighborhood in two sections. Jamaica Estates was created in 1907 by the Jamaica Estates Corporation on 503 acres of hilly terminal moraine, with trees preserved and winding streets that follow the hilly topography rather than the rectangular grid. Its detached houses, in Tudor, Craftsman, Cape Cod, and Mediterranean styles, stand around Midland Parkway. Street names are largely of UK origin, such as Aberdeen, Avon, Hovenden, Barrington, Chelsea, and Chevy Chase, and house numbers use Queens hyphen numbering. The Jamaica Estates Association was founded in 1929 and is still active. The 2000 Census recorded about 14,000 residents, with 45% foreign-born.
Well-known places in Jamaica Estates include:

  • The Historic Gatehouse and Jamaica Estates War Memorial at the Hillside Avenue entrance on Midland Parkway — an Elizabethan-style stone gatehouse with a World War II memorial beneath it; the Gatehouse and the Malls were restored in 2007 after Hurricane Isabel damaged the roof. The original gate lodge was razed, and Jamaica Estates is no longer a gated community.
  • The Midland Mall and its historical plaque, unveiled April 23, 2010, by the Aquinas Honor Society and Senator Frank Padavan.
  • The Immaculate Conception complex at Wexford Terrace, Dalny Road, Midland Parkway, and Edgerton Road — a Romanesque Revival church dedicated in 1962, with school classes beginning in September 1938.
  • The Mary Louis Academy on Edgerton Boulevard and Wexford Terrace, an all-girls Catholic college-preparatory school.
  • The Summit School high school at 188th Street and the Grand Central Parkway.
  • The United Nations International School Queens Campus on Croydon Road, serving grades K–8.
