Neighborhood Overview

Oakland Gardens is a neighborhood in eastern Queens, in Community District 11, roughly bounded by the Long Island Expressway to the north, Alley Pond Park to the east, Union Turnpike to the south, and Cunningham Park and the Clearview Expressway to the west. Springfield Boulevard is its main spine, with Bell Boulevard along the eastern edge, Union Turnpike along the southern edge, and the Horace Harding Expressway / Long Island Expressway service road along the northern edge. Its mailing ZIP code is 11364, which is shared with Bayside Hills and part of Hollis Hills, so a ‘Bayside,’ ‘Hollis Hills,’ or ‘Flushing’ mailing address is not by itself proof of the neighborhood. The area’s name probably comes from ‘The Oaks,’ the mansion Fredrick Newbold Lawrence built in 1847 on the old Lawrence family lands; the Oakland Golf Club was organized on those lands in 1896, and in the early 1960s the City bought golf club land and built Queensborough Community College, Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, and P.S. 203 just south of Oakland Lake. The Long Island Expressway opened through the neighborhood in 1958. Well-known places in and around Oakland Gardens include:
