Neighborhood Overview
Springfield Gardens is a predominantly residential neighborhood in southeastern Queens. It is roughly bounded by St. Albans to the north, Laurelton and Rosedale to the east, John F. Kennedy International Airport to the south, and Farmers Boulevard to the west, with Rochdale Village to the northwest. Springfield Boulevard is the neighborhood’s spine and its dividing line: the area west of Springfield Boulevard is in Queens Community District 12, and the Brookville section east of Springfield Boulevard is in Community District 13. Its ZIP codes are 11434 in the west, shared with St. Albans and Rochdale, and 11413 in the east. Other corridors include Farmers, Merrick, Rockaway, and Guy R. Brewer Boulevards, along with 147th Avenue and the Conduit Avenues. It is a low-rise, suburban-feeling neighborhood of mostly one- and two-family homes with garden co-op clusters, and its residents include majority Afro-Caribbean and Indo-Caribbean populations, with roots in Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, and Guyana. There is no major shopping district; local service and convenience retail serves the neighborhood. The NYPD’s 113th Precinct serves the neighborhood, with the Brookville edge possibly served by the 105th Precinct. There is no Queens Public Library branch inside Springfield Gardens; the nearest branches are in Rochdale Village, Laurelton, and St. Albans.
The wider area was once known as “Spring Field” for its many springs. Europeans settled the area in 1660, and it remained farmland until the mid-19th century. Residential development grew in the 1920s, and the community has been known as Springfield Gardens since 1927. In the 2000 Census, the neighborhood’s population was 39,827 (White 2.7%, Black 91.5%, Hispanic 4.4%, Asian 0.6%), with a median income of $56,726 — figures from 2000, not current counts.
Well-known places in Springfield Gardens include:
- Springfield Park, on the west side of Springfield Boulevard between 145th Road and 147th Avenue, a 23.54-acre park created in 1932 with Springfield Lake at its center, less than a mile north of JFK Airport, with basketball, baseball, tennis, and a spray shower, and a pond crossed by two bridges.
- Idlewild Park Preserve, at 222-02 149th Avenue, a large salt-marsh preserve named for the former Idlewild Golf Course, which took its name from JFK Airport’s original Idlewild name, with soccer, cricket, picnic areas, trails, and kayak and canoe access.
- Montefiore Cemetery, at 121-83 Springfield Boulevard, established in 1908, with more than 150,000 burials.
- Springfield Gardens Educational Campus, at 143-10 Springfield Boulevard, home of Excelsior Preparatory High School; the campus was Springfield Gardens High School until 2007.
- FDNY EMS Station 54, at 222-15 Merrick Boulevard, built in 2004 — an EMS station, not a firehouse.
- The former Springfield Gardens Long Island Rail Road station site, at Springfield Boulevard and Carson Street — history only: opened in the 1870s as “Springfield,” renamed Springfield Gardens in the October 1927 timetable, electrified May 21, 1925, and closed in 1979; the only visible evidence today is a wide gap between the tracks.
