Sunnyside is a neighborhood in western Queens, in Queens Community District 2. It is bordered by Long Island City to the west, Astoria to the north, Woodside to the east, and Maspeth and Newtown Creek to the south. Queens Boulevard runs diagonally through the middle of the neighborhood, with the Sunnyside Gardens area to the north and prewar apartment blocks to the south. Greenpoint Avenue, Skillman Avenue, and 43rd Avenue are other main streets.
Sunnyside grew as a residential bedroom community after the Queensboro Bridge opened in 1909 and the Flushing Line subway reached Queens in 1917, with most of the neighborhood built up between the early 1920s and the late 1930s. The Sunnyside Arch, an illuminated steel arch spanning 46th Street just south of Queens Boulevard, was erected in 1983 to revitalize the 46th Street commercial corridor. The Sunnyside Gardens Historic District, a planned garden-city community north of Queens Boulevard built between 1924 and 1928, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and designated a New York City historic district in 2007. Sunnyside is also home to the Sunnyside Reformed Church, organized in 1896, and the annual St. Pat’s for All parade, founded in 2000, which runs along Skillman Avenue.
