Neighborhood Overview
Utopia is a neighborhood in Community District 8 in Queens, New York City. Its boundaries are Utopia Parkway to the west, 73rd Avenue to the north, 188th Street to the east, and Union Turnpike to the south. Hillcrest lies to the west, Fresh Meadows to the north and east, and Jamaica Estates to the south. The neighborhood takes its name from the Utopia Land Company, incorporated in 1903, which bought 161.25 acres in 1904 planning a cooperative community for Jewish families from the Lower East Side. The funding failed, the colony was never built, and 118 acres were sold to Felix Isman in 1909; Utopia Parkway is named for that unrealized plan. The area was preceded by the Black Stump farming community, and Black Stump Road became 73rd Avenue in the 1911 street grid. Gross-Morton built about 24 blocks of Colonial and Cape Cod homes around 1940. There is no public school, no firehouse, no post office, no subway station, and no LIRR station inside Utopia; its commercial life is the Union Turnpike strip on its southern boundary. - Utopia Playground, the neighborhood’s only park, between Utopia Parkway and 179th Street along 73rd Avenue and Jewel Avenue, on the site of the Black Stump School and volunteer fire company; acquired in 1941 and opened in 1942, with softball, basketball, and handball courts and a mini soccer field.
